Here's a photo taken in the evening with my iPhone on Commercial Street in the city centre of Dundee.
Critique: I was struck by the in-between state of the lighting. I knew the iPhone really wasn't up to the job of dealing with low, but I wanted to try anyway. Interesting, the colors turned out okay (not great, but okay) but the perspective of the image is the most troubling. There's some strange angles with the building edges so it's hard to feel entirely satisfied with the composition. I think I would have liked for the building on the left to be dramatic and have a greater perspective in the composition.

This is another photo of a red old-style British phone booth that's on the way to work from my new flat.
Critique: they say the art of photography is the art of learning to see. That lesson struck me with this one. I've taken picture of this phone booth before, but I saw new levels of detail today. I had not actually seen the silver handle, the "pull" sign and the graffiti that accents the door. When I did finally see all those, I tried to form them into some sort of composition. I might have tried to put too much in this one - it's got four focal points that are competing for your attention (not to mention the vivid red color). Still, it was a worthwhile learning experience.

This was taken at work with the use of my iPhone, a few candies and a picture of a very lovely lady.
Critique: well, this is me just fooling around. I had some heart shaped candies and and a picture of my girlfriend and the rest is history. But it turned out to be kind of interesting as a composition (with a little color boosting and cropping). I wish I had paid more attention to the background under the photo (the upper left corner is unattractive) and figured out a way to use the reflection better. I think a bit of spotlight to bring out the translucent hearts would make this surprisingly attractive.

A photo taken in the morning on the way to work.
Critique: well, they say you learn the most from your mistakes. So I'll look at this as an opportunity to learn. I took a grand total of two pictures today - and this was the better of them. It's really a mess. I was trying to get a composition that made use of the contrasting shades of red. I thought I could get an interesting red from the car in contrast to the more natural brick red. Turns out, the color just went a bit unreal. And the contrasting brick textures didn't work - I was going for a triangular intersection in the middle of the photo. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

On the walk home, I took this picture of a few rowboats that are near the Unicorn.
Critique: there's something about the texture of boats and the natural colors that they get which intrigues me. I like the angle I got on this one, as I think it shows some interesting details. I'm not crazy about the dead zone in the lower left corner - it sort of sticks out for me as rather dull. I'd actually like to find a way to get more of the scenery in the upper left corner.

This was taken outside my flat as I was waiting for a taxi and had nothing better to do with my iPhone.
Critique: well, here's a study of line and color. I don't know if I've really found something interesting yet - but I feel like there was something lurking here that was interesting. It's probably about the primary colors and the texture of the paint and asphalt. It's simple but visually striking. Composition wise, I'm not sure if I really found something to make it sing.

This was taken with an iPhone at a small city center cemetery in Dundee.
Critique: well, I can't say I'm overly thrilled by this piece. It was damn cold and raining a bit, so it's just a slight notch above a snapshot. Additionally, the exposure is a bit dodgy thanks to the lack of light. I tried to smooth it out a bit in the digital processing - probably the key lesson here is recognizing the value of always noticing straight lines. Straight lines are unnatural and always attract the eye. The photographer needs to always consider the straight line in relationship to the lines of the photo's framing itself.

This is the result of me taking a lunch time walk over to my new flat. It's an older neighborhood and it appears there might be quite a lot of interesting pictures for me to discover.
Critique: I'm employing a bit of a cheat here - the very recognizable sign gives you a visual focal point (and provides some context for the dramatic nature of the rest of the composition). I need to tweak the angle to make this more dramatic and foreboding. It could stand a more cropping I think to add more drama. This might be a picture I try and take again with the Nikon with some quality morning or evening lighting to bring out more of the texture of the building.
